The Godhead Poised
The modern life as offering and bribe
Regales us with its vain kaleidoscope
Of paltry shades or colours' jarring clash
Allotting reflection not a moment's hope.
Yet pressing on our earthly consciousness
Invisible yet evident to all
A force of God attends inviolate
And resonates its puissant, silent call.
While deep-grooved mind in it's circular seeking turns,
The fire invisible rises in sanctified air
Escaping its towering prison while in us there burns
The godhead poised on life's descending stair.
Krishna Beloved
January 18, 2000
O night bereft of moon the stars shall guide
My steps upon the winding roads of time,
No taint of darkness ultimately can hide
Nor veil from sight the mystery sublime.
I've found the fruited grove where the God-child plays
And slumbers in this hidden cave of mine,
Opening late the secret Book of Days
I befriended Him as I cleansed the vaulted Shrine.
In dream-like fields amongst the golden kine
I spy his blue-white radiance abroad
Fluting to rapturous bloom this golden sward,
Krishna, beloved, f
New Direction
What new direction signals me
To seek in calm sustaining light
The answer to a body's plight
Attain by self-discovery
Become a channel of delight
A force-filled healing entity,
In song of human unity
And love that calls down heaven's might.
A glowing fire in my breast
Illumines now the mind and will
And knows Her grace will surely fill
The soul that lives at Her behest.
Build up the inner being's peace
O Lord who guides this fledgling's flight,
Purge the residue of night
And from my smallness grant release.

He Who Abides Within
When the robe of night is cast aside
And heaven's symbols merge in light
From mystic stays in subtler words
We wake refreshed to earthly sight.
Immortal spheres to mortal soil
Traversing plane to vaster plane,
An immortality we seek
Who immortal are and without stain.
Assign not blame to vengeful gods
Or nether forces lurking deep
Alone we are responsible
For the motley company we keep.
All the stars are ours to hold
For us the graceful angels pray
And God within our substance dwells
At work upon the sleeping clay.
Higher Music
Might yet a higher music tune these ears
To sounds beyond the atonality
Of life's discordant strains and cadences
And strife where falls no lasting harmony.
May the rhythms of the inner life spring forth
In concert with the growing soul of man
New melodies retain the godhead's call
In stanzas from diviner lips that scan
The sacred scores of immortality.
May voices from ethereal heights descend
In chorus with the rising chant of earth
Transforming to a world-devotion's blend
The Veda-singer's song of conscious cells:
Between the notes the supreme Composer dwells.

Modern Life's Prescription
A materia medica for the wounded soul
A pharmacopoeia of temporal cures,
The transient unsatisfying dole
From worldly forces casting us their lures
While the inner life is in abeyance held.
We are thrown from satisfaction to desire,
Our lives are tossed and errantly propelled
Along a grounded view that climbs no higher
Than mind's conceptions or our earth-bound state.
We walk as mendicants in regal clothes
Bound in hoops by the whims of time-born fate
Ignoring the god within who slowly grows
Through shocks and stimuli on his inward quest,
The silent One, the great and unknown Guest.

For Ved Prakash
Sri Aurobindo is My Refuge
Gazing on Thee I speak Her name,
Remembering Her, think of Thee
Invoking Thy grace Her smile I see
And through Her face Thy majesty.
I've touched Her feet and known His peace
And through Their love the soul's release
From darkness and the swift increase
Of light that set my heart aflame.

Aspiring Through
the Darkness
When darkness closes in upon itself
And the pitch of night encompasses our day,
A cloak of black obscurity denies
The soul's advance within the fragile clay.
Dull and errant are our leaden steps
When even the sun seems cast in shades of grey,
Laboured our breath and stilled the voice within
As we meet our demons past come back to play.
This we must face, the karma of old deeds
Returned to haunt the traveller on the way,
Till we expunge the residue of lives
Of lust and littleness that hold us prey

Go Deeper
Upon the crested wave my prayer resounds
And in the susurration of the leaves,
Burns with the stars in their mute nocturnal rounds
And soars aloft on the scented morning's breeze.
Still petals of the flowering soul within
Reflect the light of a deity so fair
Descending on the fragrance of tuberose and jasmine
He enters in silence perfuming the sanctified air.
All moves towards this hidden core of peace;
Renewed, the questing spirit deeper goes
To realms where all our worldly actions cease.
A piercing ray of wisdom downward flows
To charge the mind with vast celestial speech
And words transcendent beyond thought

Prayer of Aspiration
February
2000
We carry so much baggage burdening down
With the weight of reasoning mind's profundity,
Our vital appetites and indulgences,
The heroic godhead struggling to break free.
If only we could focus on the flame
Of aspiration burning at our core
Repeat the mantric word,
invoke the Name,
Install within the image we adore.
Earth in its subtle atmosphere prepares
A new material body for its king,
Omnipotent, inviolate and pure.
From eternal realms the grace unperishing
