(The Mother’s statement on the working of Kali)
Behind all destructions, whether the immense destructions of Nature,
earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, cyclones, floods, etc., or the violent
human destructions, wars, revolutions, revolts, I find the power of
Kali, who is working in the earth-atmosphere to hasten the progress of
transformation.
All that is not only divine in essence but also divine in realisation is
by its very nature above these destructions and cannot be touched by
them. Thus the extent of the disaster gives the measure of the
imperfection.
The true way of preventing the repetition of these destructions is to
learn their lesso

According to what I see and know, as a
general rule, children over 14 should be allowed their independence
and should be given advice only if and when they ask for it.
They should know that they are responsible for managing
their own existence.

On Sri Aurobindo
(From a meditation written on the day after the Mother first saw Sri
Aurobindo)
It matters little that there are thousands of beings plunged in the
densest ignorance, He whom we saw yesterday is on earth; his presence is
enough to prove that a day will come when darkness shall be transformed
into light, and Thy reign shall be indeed established upon earth.
O Lord, Divine Builder of this marvel, my heart overflows with joy and
gratitude when I think of it, and my hope has no bounds.
My adoration is beyond all words, my reverence is silent.

Meditation
When you sit in
meditation you must be as candid and simple as a child, not interfering by your
external mind, expecting nothing, insisting on nothing. Once this condition is
there, all the rest depends upon the aspiration deep within you. And if you
call upon Divinity, then too you will have the answer.

Each meditation ought to
be a new revelation, for in each meditation something new happens.
Even if you are not
apparently successful in your meditation, it is better to persist and to be
more obstinate than the opposition of your lower nature.

Mental
Education
Of all lines of education, mental education is the most widely
known and practised, yet except in a few rare cases there are gaps which make
it something very incomplete and in the end quite insufficient.
Generally speaking, schooling
is considered to be all the mental education that is necessary. And when a
child has been made to undergo, for a number of years, a methodical training
which is more like cramming than true schooling, it is considered that whatever
is necessary for his mental development has been done. Nothing of the kind.
Even conceding that the training is given with due measure and discrimination

Visiting Sri Aurobindo's room
Somebody wants to visit Sri
Aurobindo's room again and sit there to meditate for some time.
What are his qualifications and titles to such a great
privilege?
Visiting again is all right. People can come to
Sri Aurobindo's room. But to be allowed to sit and meditate there,
one must have done much for Sri Aurobindo.

Sweet Mother,
You have said
that to be allowed to sit in Sri Aurobindo's room and meditate there,
“one must have done much for Him”¹
What do You
mean by that, Mother? What can one do for the Lord which will be this
“much”?
To do something fo
I don't think we can speak of this one either. No, I don't think so.
What we should actually do is make a selection and only talk about
aphorisms that give us an opportunity to explain a few things. But these
two.... People aren't ready to understand. And besides, they don't fit
the style of the Bulletin. What we need is a "combat magazine," a
journal that combats all the ordinary ideas; then all these aphorisms
(the ones on doctors, for instance) would be like ... yes, like
commanders in the battle. A journal with the goal of "demolishing the
old idols." Something along those lines. It would be very interesting to
do such a magazine - a combat magazi
Sri Aurobindo had made certain statements about me in those letters,
and Z deleted them. (Anyway, it makes no difference for your book,
because I'm not at all keen on having any statements about me
published.)
But Z is not honest. He hasn't been honest at all.... We were
forced to intervene once or twice because his deletions distorted the
meaning. We finally told him (for the book published here), 'We won't
publish it unless you restore these things.'
(silence)
I have also reread A.P.'s 'Evening Talks.'
Oh, in that, too, there are a lot of.... I myself wasn't present, so I
don't know what Sri Aurobindo said,
(Mother reads a note she wrote in connection with a quarrel at the Ashram's handmade paper factory:)
The Employer to the Employee
"Nothing lasting can be established without a basis of trust. And this trust must be mutual.
"You must be convinced that it is not only my good that I am
aiming at, but also yours. And on my side I must know and feel that you
are here not merely to profit but also to serve.
"The welfare of the whole is dependent on the welfare of each
part, and the harmonious growth of the whole is dependent on the
progress of every part.
"If you feel you are exploited, then I to
